Tribeni



Tribeni, famous for the confluence of Ganga, Jamuna, Saraswati situated around 50 km away from Kolkata in Eastern Railway’s Bandel-Katwa section. Once, famous for its Nyayaik (philosophy) toles & Chatuspathis,Tribeni has a rich cultural heritage. The famous Sri Jagganath Tarkapanchan, teacher of Sir William Jones and the compiler of Hindu Laws was the son of soil of Tribeni.

Mythology says, it is also the abode of Lord Shiva like Benaras. Heaven’s architect Lord Vishwakarma tried to make a city against the will of Lord Shiva but to save himself from the wrath of Shiva, he ran away without taking his tools. Like Yuktaveni,Allahabad Tribeni known as Muktaveni. The name of Tribeni also depicted in Dhoie’s Pawan Dutam, a 12th century Sanskrit piece.

From the historical point of view first mosque of ancient Bengal was erected here in 1298 AD by Zafar Ali Khan Gazi a military general of Delhi Sultanate after defeating the Hindu king of Saptagram. This mosque was erected after demolishing a Vishnu temple of Orissian temple architecture. The plinth of the mosque shows several Hindu deities including Vishnu, Saraswati, Dashavtar (ten avatars of Vishnu), Rashichakras (Horoscope), Lord Buddha & Jain Tirthankar Parsvanath. Gazi was buried in the garbhagriha in 1313 after being killed in a war.

In a portion of the mosque there are the graves of Gaji's younger son and his grandsons. On the eastern side are the graves of Gaji and his two elder sons. Gaji's wife, a Hindu princess, is also buried here.

                                                                      Benimadhab Temple


In the recent past seven Shiva temple known as Benimadhav, Sashisekhar, Vishweshwar, Rameswar ,Jogewshwar, Gangadhar & Chandishwar was built by 1841(1763 Sakabda). Among seven of them Benimadhav, Vishweswar & Gangadhar are built in black stones & rest are marbel stones.

How to go:

Tribeni is 48 km from Calcutta by rail. It is in Bandel-Katwa section of Eastern Railway. The journey takes around an hour-and-a-half by local train. The town is hardly two hours by road, along Kalyani Expressway. You can also go via Bandel.
